Before you ship a page edit, predict what mention rate change it should produce. The forecasting step that closes the AEO feedback loop.

Methodology

Simulate before publish is the AEO discipline of predicting what mention-rate change a proposed page edit should produce, before shipping it. Without a forecast, every edit is a hope; with one, you can prioritize edits by predicted impact, kill low-leverage work before the implementation cost is spent, and hold the verify step accountable to the prediction. It is the missing closing step in most AEO programs in 2026.

Why most AEO programs skip this

Most AEO programs end at the gap analysis: 'here is what you are missing, go fix it.' That is operationally fine until two competing fixes both look promising and the team has to pick one. Without a predicted lift per fix, the choice is by gut. Six weeks later, half the team's quarter-long content investments turn out to have been bets on the wrong fix. A simulation step makes the bet explicit and prioritizes the portfolio.

How to build the surrogate

Train a lightweight model (XGBoost is the practical default in 2026) on the relationship between content features (entity density, definition-first openings, schema coverage, freshness, internal-link count, comparison patterns) and observed mention rate across many pages and many questions. The model is small — usually under a megabyte — and trains in under a minute on a typical 50-brand corpus. The output: given a page's feature vector and a target buyer question, predict mention rate.

What the forecast actually predicts

The surrogate predicts the marginal effect of the proposed change: if you go from feature vector A to feature vector B, what is the expected delta in mention rate. Confidence intervals around the prediction matter as much as the point estimate, because predicted lifts smaller than the noise band are not meaningful. AskRanker reports both: 'predicted lift +6 points (CI -2 to +14)' is a more useful answer than '+6.'

What good simulation unlocks

Three operational changes follow once a usable simulator is in place. First, prioritization shifts from gut to predicted-lift-per-implementation-hour. Second, the verify step (14-day after-action review) has a target: did the actual lift land within the predicted CI. Third, the team learns where the simulator is wrong, retrains, and the simulator gets sharper over time. Programs that do this for two quarters reach a state where every content sprint has both a prediction and a verification.
